Rwenzori Mountains National Park
Rwenzori Mountains National Park is nestled within the ‘Mountains of the Moon’, also known as the Rwenzori Mountains through which the Park gets its name. The Park lies in Western Uganda in the East African Rift Valley and straddles also to the Democratic Republic of Congo; it is within proximity to DR Congo’s world-wide famous Virunga National Park – the only home of endangered mountain gorillas in Central Africa. This snowcapped mountain is the third highest in Africa rising up to 5,109 meters. It is a memorable experience hiking to the summits of the highest peak of the Rwenzori Mountains, Peak Margherita.
The beautiful snowcapped Rwenzori Mountains are of course the main attraction in the remarkable Rwenzori Mountains National Park. These mountains support glaciers and are one of the sources of the world’s longest River, the Nile River. The Park annually attract an elephantine number of tourists (avid hikers) who congregate to this Park to take part in the strenuous yet amazing hikes to one of the tallest mountains in Africa.
The Rwenzori area is a world-class hiking and mountaineering destination, and hiking to the summits of the highest peak, Margherita, is exceptionally beautiful! Hiking to the summits can take like 12 days and once you reach the top you are ensured of stunning views over the nearby surroundings of DR Congo and Uganda, of which ‘by chance’ you can even spot the endangered mountain gorillas in the Virunga Park. Atop the Rwenzori mountains are very many eye catching attractions such as glaciers, snowfields, lakes, and waterfalls plus a myriad of bird species as well as several wildlife species like; forest elephants, duikers, black and white Colobus, hyraxes, chimpanzees, and L’Hoest’s monkeys, among others. The Park’s botany has been described as one of the most beautiful in the world.
Hiking the Rwenzori Mountains is really a very fascinating experience that every hiker would not love to miss, it’s so magnificent!!!! The beauty of the valley of nine lakes, the wonder of the high glaciers, the bearded lichen hanging from giant heathers with a backdrop of rocky cliffs, crags and snow capped peaks are among the fantastic things to gaze at while here. The wide diversity of flora and fauna with various biospheres as you climb up through different vegetation zones offers an ultimate experience for hiking.

Briefly About the Park:
The Rwenzori Mountains National Park, which is also the conservation area for the Rwenzori Mountains, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which covers a total area of approximately 1000 square kilometers. The Park straddles through the districts of Kabarole, Kasese and Bundibudyo, and it is within vicinity of various other Uganda’s fantastic Parks such as Kibale Forest, Bwindi Impenetrable, Queen Elizabeth, Semuliki, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks.
The Park is most famous for its remarkable mountain and for its beautiful plant life coupled with waterfalls, glaciers and a lot of other unique mountainous vegetation. The park has glaciers, snowfields, waterfalls and has been portrayed as one of the mainly attractive Alpine areas around the world.
